Nations don’t build themselves. People do. The world is amazed at the prosperity of the tiny oil rich nations in the Persian Gulf, namely, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates.
Specifically, Qatar was awarded as the host of the 2020 World Cup through bribing FIFA officials. Since then, Qatar has started its tremendous nation-building effort through recruiting migrant workers from poor countries with false promises then exploit them as slaves.
Hosting the World Cup is an effective diplomatic strategy for many emerging nations. “Qatar sees hosting the World Cup as part of a much wider plan to position itself as the diplomatic, cultural and sporting hub of the region, future-proofed against the day when its natural gas reserves run out,” writes Owen Gibson in The Guardian.
