1. Coronavirus cases rising in 40 of 50 states
Confirmed cases of coronavirus are rising in 40 of 50 states, especially in Arizona, California, Florida, and Texas, accounting for half of the nation’s total cases on Thursday. In a second day streak, the U.S. has recorded more than daily 50,000 cases, the highest since the peak in April. Associated Press
Why it matters: The nation is heading into the 4th of July celebration. Officials are expecting more gatherings in public areas. Dr. Anthony Fauci is calling it a “very disturbing week.” Governors are now urging people to stay home if they can.
More Context: The lack of mask-wearing and irresponsible gatherings of young individuals are considered to be major reasons behind the rise of cases. The governor of Texas reverses course and mandates masks wearing in counties with more than 20 confirmed cases.
2. New developments in the Jeffery Epstein case
Ghislaine Maxwell, a former girlfriend and longtime associate of Jeffrey Epstein, was arrested for helping Epstein recruit, groom and then sexually abuse girls, one as young as 14. New York Times
Why it matters: The arrest of Ms. Maxwell as Epstein’s longtime associate allowed investigations to continue since Epstein’s death. Powerful world leaders were considered to be Epstein’s customers in his sex trafficking business, including President Trump, the Saudi Crown Prince, and UK’s Prince Andrew.
More Context: A month after Epstein’s arrest, in August 2019, he was found hanged by himself at his cell in a prison in Lower Manhattan, where he was jailed for sex trafficking charges.
3. A “Border Wall” Democrats agree with?
The Trump Administration hires a California-based tech firm Anduril that uses artificial intelligence to detect and prevent illegal crossings from Mexico. This kind of “virtual wall” was long favored by some Democrats. The Washington Post
Why it matters: A “virtual wall” using “smart” technology is a much cheaper alternative and potentially more effective alternative to the 15 billion dollars concert-and-steal border wall President Trump is currently promoting, especially in rugged locations.
What they are saying: “No matter where you go as a country, we’re going to need to have situational awareness on the border,” says Matthew Steckman, Anduril’s chief revenue officer, “No matter if talking to a Democrat or a Republican, they agree that this type of system is needed.”
