White Men Indicted on Ahmaud Arbery | Coronavirus New Hotspots | Disney Delays Reopening | Tesla Ranked Worst

US

Three white men were indicted on charges including malice and felony murderin the killing of Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man fatally shot while jogging in a neighborhood in Georgia.

The Democratic National Convention will take place on Aug.17-20 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Joe Biden plans to accept the presidential nomination in person. State delegators were told not to travel to the venue. The convention will be held almost entirely virtual.

COVID-19

New coronavirus hotspots are emerging(in Arizona, California, Mississippi, Nevada, Texas) as the U.S. recorded a one-day total new confirmed cases of 34,700, the highest level since late April. Several states, mostly in the South and West, are slowing their reopening plans

New York, Connecticut and New Jersey issued a travel advisory asking travelers from states with high coronavirus infection rates to go into quarantine for 14 days. 

~ Enforcement of the rule will vary by state. While Gov. Cuomo (D-N.Y.) said violators will be subject to mandatory quarantine and face fines from $2,000 to $10,000, the penalties were unclear in New Jersey and Connecticut.

WORLD

President Trump says he would send some of the 9,500 troops he plans to withdraw from Germany over its Eastern border to Poland after meeting Polish President Andrzej Duda at White House on Wednesday, the first foreign leader to visit since the pandemic (Politico)

~ Trump’s previous decision of withdrawing troops stationed in Germany sparked widespread criticism for benefiting Russia’s increasing aggression but Trump insisted Germany failed to reach the NATO agreement on military spending.

Kosovo’s president Hashim Thaci was indicted for war crimes just days before the special summit with Serbia at the White House on Saturday. The indictment was announced by a special prosecutor in Hague for Thaci’s crimes against ethnic Serbs connecting to Kosovo’s 1998 – 1999 war of independence (WaPo)

~ Serbia never recognized Kosovo’s 2008 declaration for independence. The summit was intended to solve their impasses.

BUSINESS

The German payments firm Wirecard collapsed on Thursday owing creditors almost $4bn after disclosing $2bn hole in this balance sheet that its auditor EY said was the result of a sophisticated global fraud (Reuters)

Disney is indefinitely delaying the opening date of its California-based theme parks planned to reopen on July 17 until receiving approval from state officials after employees expressed concerns for their safety (CNBC)

TECH

Google announced a licensing program today to pay publishers for high-quality news contentin a new initiative called “new news experience,” aiming to diversify its support for news businesses and help people to stay informed and exposed to a world of different issues and interests.

~ To start Google has already signed partnerships with local and national publications in Germany, Australia and Brazil.


JD Power scored Tesla vehicles the worst among 32 major automaker brands in which Tesla cars suffered 250 problems per 100 vehicles as reported by customers, compared to an industry average of 166 problems in the first 90 days of ownership, according to the JD Power Initial Quality Study released on Wednesday.
